WASHINGTON: The outcome of the US presidential election remained in the balance late Thursday as a handful of battleground states complete their vote counts.

According to forecasts by the US Internet, Democrat Joe Biden has obtained at least 253 of the 270 electoral votes he needs, or 264 if Arizona is included. Fox News and the Associated Press appealed for his support.

So far, Donald Trump has accumulated 214 votes and is still in contention in some states, which will give current Republican congressmen a road to re-election.

The states expected to report the final vote count on Thursday night or Friday are Georgia (16 electoral votes), North Carolina (15) and Nevada (6).

However, mailed ballots sent on or before North Carolina’s election day count as November 12.
