ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE: President Donald Trump will announce a further drawdown of U.S. troops from Iraq on Wednesday, a senior administration official told reporters on Tuesday.
The official said that before the announcement is made, it will be republished in the coming days to further reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan.
The decision was made when Republican Trump was hit by reporting that he had made defamatory statements about the American war dead.
Before the November 3 election, Trump fell behind Democratic rival Joe Biden in the polls. His announcement and its timing may aim to convince voters that he is delivering on his promise to end what he calls the endless war in the United States.
About 5,200 US soldiers are deployed in Iraq to combat the Islamic State militant group.
An unnamed US official said last month that the United States expects to cut its troops in Iraq by about a third in the coming months.
The United States currently has about 8,600 soldiers in Afghanistan. Trump said in an interview with Axios released last month that the United States plans to reduce this number to about 4,000.
