Trump gives permission for resumption of the military training program for Pakistan

Islamabad: In another major development, the Trump government approved the resumption of the IMET (International Military Education and Training) program for Pakistani personnel in US institutions and strengthened military cooperation between the two countries.

Approval came the day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had a telephone conversation with General Chief of Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa to discuss the murder of Iran’s powerful revolutionary commander General Casem Solemani. The situation in the region is being monitored.

Alice Wells, Deputy Secretary-General for South and Central Asia, said on Twitter on Friday that it would “strengthen” military cooperation between the two countries on “common priorities”.

“To strengthen military cooperation on common priorities and to improve US national security, President Donald Trump has authorized the resumption of international military education and training in Pakistan. The suspension of overall security assistance to Pakistan remains in force “

He noted, however, that the general moratorium on security assistance continued to apply to Pakistan. In August 2018, the Trump administration suspended a 10-year international military education and training program (IMET) for Pakistani personnel at US agencies.
