TikTok surpassed Facebook to become the world’s most downloaded application in 2020 from fourth place in 2019.
According to the business magazine Nikkei Asia, citing a global app download survey report, TikTok ranked first among the most downloaded apps in 2020, while Facebook continues to rank second in the world.
According to the magazine, this Chinese short video app topped the list of social media providers for the first time since the study was first conducted in 2018.
This Chinese video-sharing platform is the only non-Facebook-owned application that ranks among the top five downloads worldwide. In its home country, TikTok owner ByteDance also tops the list with the Chinese video app Douyin.
Even after former U.S. President Donald Trump tried to ban it in the U.S., the continued popularity of TikTok still emerged. Since the beginning of the survey in 2018, Facebook-owned apps have been at the top of the list, and the company still occupies the top spot.
It’s worth noting here that TikTok Stories will allow users to see content posted by accounts they follow within 24 hours before being deleted.
WhatsApp introduced a feature that allows users to post photos or videos that disappear after being seen.
Mark Zuckerberg’s social media giants occupy the rest of the top five, with Facebook’s flagship app and WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger all appearing.
Last year, then President Donald Trump issued an executive order banning the download of the TikTok app in the United States.
The Trump administration claims that TikTok poses a national security risk because the Chinese government has access to its user data. The company has repeatedly denied these allegations.
