Shooting kills 8 in US city of Indianapolis: police

Washington: Indianapolis police said that the gunman killed at least eight people in a shooting by a delivery company, and it is believed that the gunman then shot himself.

Police spokeswoman Gina Cook said at a press conference that all the victims died at the FedEx factory where the shooting occurred on the fourth night of the week.

A man working in a twilight shift at a factory near the city’s international airport told the local broadcaster WISH-TV that he saw the gunman start shooting and heard more than a dozen gunshots.

Jeremiah Miller said: “I saw a man holding some kind of submachine gun, an automatic rifle, and he was shooting in public. I immediately hid and felt scared.”

“My friend’s mother, she came in and told us to take a car. What we have been doing is telling everyone that our colleagues are not going to work today.”

Cook told reporters that around 11:00 pm (0300 GMT), officials were called for an “active shooting incident,” adding that they believed the gunman-undetermined-had died by suicide.

Cook said: “The officers responded, they came in, they got into their jobs. Many people are trying to face this problem because it’s a sight no one has ever seen.”

Cook told reporters that the authorities believe that there is no longer a direct threat to public safety, and the police are still collecting information to identify victims.

Cook said: “We found eight people with gunshot wounds at the scene. These eight people were pronounced dead at the scene.”

“This is a tragedy.”

A FedEx spokeswoman confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the company’s facility was the location of the shooting and said the company was cooperating with the authorities.

The company said in a statement: “We are aware of the tragic shooting incident at ground facilities near the Indianapolis Airport.”

“Safety is our top priority, and our thinking is closely related to all those affected.”

According to reports, the factory employs more than 4,000 employees.

Another employee, Timothy Boillat, told WISH-TV that when he witnessed the shooting, he saw about 30 police cars arriving at the scene.

He said: “After listening to the shooting, I did see a corpse on the floor.”

“Fortunately, I was far from where he didn’t see me.”
