Russia opens case against WhatsApp for violating personal data law

By

Moscow: According to Interfax news agency, Russia filed an administrative lawsuit against Facebook (FB.O) WhatsApp on Friday, claiming that it failed to localize the data of Russian users in Russia.

Facebook did not immediately comment.

A day earlier, a Russian court fined Alphabet Inc.’s Google (GOOGL.O) 3 million roubles for violating personal data legislation and registered administrative proceedings against Facebook and Twitter (TWTR.N) for the same offence.

These cases are part of a wider quarrel between Russia and large technology companies, and Moscow often fines social media giants for failing to delete banned content and trying to force foreign technology companies to open offices in Russia.

Interfax News quoted court documents that WhatsApp may be fined 1 million to 6 million rubles (13,700 to 82,250 US dollars). The court date has not yet been determined.
