Interior Ministry sources told on Friday that Punjab has decided to release nearly 20,000 of its 46,000 prisoners into the ongoing COVID-19 corona virus crisis, as prisons in Pakistan remain overcrowded.
Sources said prison chiefs contacted the court, approved bail for a sentence of seven years or less, and took that step in accordance with special instructions.
The source also said bail has also been filed for prisoners, the elderly or perpetrators of over 60 who have been jailed for petty crimes. In addition, cases with penalties ranging from 7 to 25 years are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
In addition, bail requests have been made for prisoners on trial for less serious crimes.
