Israeli strike in Syria puts civil jet in danger: Russia

By

Moscow: Russian Ministry of Defense said on Friday that a Syrian passenger plane was being threatened by Israeli fighter jets, which they used as a shield when they attacked the outskirts of Damascus the day before.

The allegations come in a time of escalating tensions in Syria, where fights have escalated in Idlib in northern Syria. With the support of the Russian army, the Syrian government forces clashed with Turkish troops after failing to comply with the cease-fire agreement that supported the opposition.

A spokesperson for the Israeli Prime Minister did not respond to a request for comment. Israel rarely recognizes strikes in Syria. Israel has repeatedly attacked Syria and Iran-related targets in Syria in recent years and vowed to counter Iran’s increased influence on its neighbors.

Not long ago, a Ukrainian passenger plane crashed after taking off from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board. A Ukrainian passenger plane crashed a month ago. News came about the so-called attempted event. Iran says the plane was accidentally shot down by the Paramilitary Revolutionary Guards.

Spokesman Major General Igor Konashenko of the Russian Ministry of Defense said Friday in a statement that the strike took place around 2 o’clock.

Thursday local time. He said that four Israeli F-16 fighter jets were sheltered by a passenger plane intended to land in Damascus when they hit the outskirts of Damascus with eight rockets.

Konashenko did not disclose the airline or flight number, but merely said it was an Airbus 320 aircraft that departed from Tehran, with 172 people on board, “close to entering the deadly air defense missile and artillery zone.”

He said the aircraft was relocated to Hemeimeem Air Force Base in Latakia, a Syrian coastal province about 215 kilometers north of Damascus, and landed safely due to rapid action by Syrian flight controllers.

“The use of civilian aircraft as cover to prevent retaliation against Syrian air defense has become a trick for the Israeli Air Force,” said Konashenkov.

The Associated Press cannot independently verify Russia’s claims.

FlightRadar24, an air traffic tracking website, shows that the Syrian airline Cham Wings Flight 5 14 (Airbus320-211) left Najaf on Thursday at 1:07 AM local time. It can be seen that it approached Damascus after about an hour, then turned and turned north.

After half an hour it seemed to have landed in or near Hmeimeem. Flightradar24 provides a list of unknown arrival times and destinations.

The airline did not immediately comment. US Treasury places Cham Wings on the 2016 sanction list after allegedly militants have been transported to Syria to fight on behalf of the Syrian government and weapons and equipment to help it in a nine-year conflict.

In a statement, the Russian army accused Israel of “endangering the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians”.

Konashenkov said: “Planned air traffic in Syrian airspace and around the world is conducted at known heights and is clearly detected by Israeli radar equipment.”

This is not the first time that Russia has condemned Israel’s “irresponsible actions” in Syria.

In September 2018, the Ministry of Defense stated that Israeli troops had not issued sufficient strike warnings to Moscow and placed a Russian Il-20 aircraft in the firing line of the Syrian anti-missile system.

The plane was shot down and 15 people were killed on board.
