New Delhi: Official data show that the death toll from the coronavirus in India exceeded 250,000 on Wednesday, and the pandemic has swept the entire country of 1.3 billion people.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, there have been 4,205 deaths in the past 24 hours. This is a new record, with a total of 254,197 deaths.
The number of cases rose by nearly 350,000 to 23.3 million, second only to the United States.
Although the epidemic in major cities is relieving, the virus appears to be spreading uncontrollably in the vast rural hinterland where two-thirds of India’s population lives.
Many experts believe the official numbers of people dying in India, which has one of the world’s poorest-funded health care systems, are an underestimate.
“Deaths are much higher than what our official data is revealing,” Anant Bhan, an independent health policy and bioethics researcher, told AFP.
