India reported its first death to the coronavirus on Thursday after the death of one of the recently tested positive citizens.
The man “has been Confirmed for #COVID19. The necessary contact tracing, isolation & other measures as per protocol are being carried out,” B Sriramulu, health minister for Karnataka state, wrote on Twitter.
The disease has recently been classified as a “pandemic” by the World Health Organization and has killed more than 4,000 people worldwide and infected more than 120,000 people.
It originated in the moist market of Wuhan, China, and has expanded to Europe, the United States, Canada, Pakistan, India, the Middle East and the rest of the world.
The widespread infection forced U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday to announce that the country will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Trump administration has been heavily criticized for responding to the public health crisis, and has also announced several steps to mitigate the economic impact of the corona virus.
“We are marshaling the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people,” Trump said in a prime-time televised address from the Oval Office. “This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history.”
