Election Committee: Afghan President Ghani wins second term

KABUL: Afghanistan’s independent election commission says President Ashraf Ghani has won a second term as president.

The European Commission announced on Tuesday that Ghani won 50.64% of the 39.52% turnout of Challenger and CEO Abdullah Abdullah on 28 September last year.

Election results have been repeatedly delayed due to allegations of misconduct and technical counting issues.

Head of the election committee Hawa Alam Nuristani has previously stated that of the approximately 9.6 million eligible Afghans, 1.8 million Afghan citizens participated in the elections.

A few days later, US Secretary of Defense Mark Espe announced a ceasefire agreement between the United States and the Taliban, which could lead to the withdrawal of US troops from the country.
