Washington: US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had ordered the US military to attack and destroy any Iranian ships that harassed US Navy ships.
Just hours after the satellite was launched in Tehran, Trump said on Twitter: “I have instructed the US Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,”
The order came a week after 11 small Iranian Revolutionary Guard speedboats swarmed on US Navy and Coast Guard ships in international waters in the northern Gulf.
The incident occurred when American ships patrolled the area.
The Pentagon did not fire, but the Pentagon said that the Iranians had taken “dangerous and provocative actions” and that collisions could be even worse.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s ship “passed over the bow and stern of American ships repeatedly at very close distances and high speeds”, reaching a point within 10 yards (nine meters) of the bow.
The US side stated that the smaller IRGC naval ship ignored the warning from the US ship for about an hour before finally responding to radio communications and then leaving.
According to the Meier News Agency, on Sunday, the Revolutionary Guards accused the US Navy of “unprofessional and provocative behavior” that interfered with their exercises.
Before Trump issued a statement, Tehran announced on Wednesday the first successful launch of a military satellite.
