On Sunday, mainland China reported 39 new cases of coronavirus, compared with 30 cases a day ago. The number of asymptomatic cases has also increased tremendously because Beijing is still struggling to fight the disease despite strict controls.
The National Health Council said in a statement on Monday that 78 new asymptomatic cases had been identified by the end of Sunday, compared with 47 cases the day before.
After serious containment measures have successfully reduced the infection rate in recent weeks, imported cases and asymptomatic patients who have the virus and can spread it to others but have no symptoms have become a major concern in China.
Among the new cases of symptoms, 38 people entered China from abroad, compared to 25 people a day ago. According to reports, a new type of locally transmitted infection occurred in the southern province of Guangdong, which was lower than the first five days in the same province.
The relevant authorities in Guangdong Province said the new local transmission case in Shenzhen broke out when it was a person from Hubei Province.
Guangdong Provincial Health Commission raised the risk levels of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Jieyang from low to medium on Sunday evening.
A total of 81,708 cases have been reported in mainland China, including 3,331 deaths.
Since the epidemic peak in February, the number of infections per day has fallen sharply: at that time, hundreds of cases were reported daily, but new infections are added every day.
With the virus spreading all over the world, China has closed its borders to foreigners, although most imported cases involve Chinese returning from abroad.
The central government also urged local authorities to identify and isolate asymptomatic patients.
