Baghdad: The funeral procession in northern Iraq was attacked, killing at least 15 people.
Since the Iraqi security forces defeated northern Iraq with the assistance of the US-led coalition in 2017, northern Iraq has been a hot spot for Islamic State activities. The Iraqi army often conducts anti-Daesh operations in the rugged northern mountains and the deserts of western Iraq, where they are known to take refuge.
In recent years, Islamic State’s attacks have decreased, but they continue to exist in areas where security forces are frequently targeted by ambushes, attacks, and improvised explosive devices.
Sometimes Da’esh managed to launch an attack in the capital. On July 19, a suicide bombing attack occurred in Sadr, a suburb of Baghdad, killing at least 36 people. Da’esh claimed to have launched the attack.
