BAYRAKLI: Rescuers dug through heavy blocks of concrete with their bare hands Saturday in a desperate search for survivors from a powerful earthquake that levelled buildings across Greece and Turkey, killing at least 26 people.
The earthquake occurred late Friday afternoon and caused a tsunami on the Aegean island of Samos. The waves turned the street into a river in a small town on the west coast of Turkey.
According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 7.0 earthquake is 14 kilometers (9 miles) away from the Greek town of Kalovasi on Samos.
I felt this in Istanbul and Athens. It also created diplomatic opportunities for these two historic opponents. Greek Prime Minister Kyriacos Mizotakis rarely called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip. Erdogan expressed his condolences and support.
