Washington: House colleagues said on Friday that John Lewis, a nonviolent civil rights fighter, marched with Martin Luther King Jr and was nearly beaten by police for decades, beaten to death at the age of 80.

“Today, America mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of American history,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

She described Lewis, who was recently battling pancreatic cancer, as “a titan of the civil rights movement whose goodness, faith and bravery transformed our nation.”

African-American Lewis, the son of Crops and one of the early freedom knights, fought apartheid against the U.S. transportation system in the early 1960s, eventually becoming one of the most powerful voices of justice and equality in the United States.
