Islamabad: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) resumed direct flights to Iran on Thursday. The five-year gap was aimed at developing people-to-people links and promoting tourism.

Spokesperson Abdullah Khan said that PIA’s first flight was from Lahore to Mashhad on Wednesday night, and the direct flight from Karachi to Mashhad will begin today.

The Iranian ambassador to Pakistan, Mohamed Ali Husseini, posted on the social networking site Twitter that the two countries have agreed to promote aviation cooperation.
