Iran’s Rouhani offers aid to Lebanon after Beirut blast

Tehran: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed condolences and medical support to Lebanon after a huge explosion at the port of Beirut on Wednesday that destroyed the entire city.

The government website stated that Rouhani wrote in a letter to his Lebanese colleagues that Tehran was “prepared to provide medical and medical assistance, and to help treat the injured and other assistance.”

Rouhani also expressed his hope to find out the cause of the deadly explosion and restore calm in Beirut as soon as possible.

The Lebanese Red Cross said on Wednesday that the explosion caused more than 100 deaths and injured more than 4,000.

The explosion appeared to be caused by a fire that ignited 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that were not secured in the warehouse.

The head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society said in a statement that it will provide Lebanon with 9 tons of food aid and medical supplies.

Karim Hemmati added that Iran will also provide Lebanon with a field hospital and specialized medical teams and equipment.

The current government of Lebanon was announced in January and is composed of the pro-Iranian Shia movement Hezbollah and its allies.
